The Canadian Opera Company has announced details of its 2019 Centre Stage Gala: Subaqueous, the COC’s largest annual fundraiser. Supporting the COC Ensemble Studio, this much-anticipated event will be held on October 30, 2019, at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto.

Subaqueous – meaning existing, formed, or taking place underwater – is indeed the perfect name for the gala event. Inspired by the fantasy and fairy tales found in the COC’s 2019/2020 season, and drawing inspiration from the watery realm of Antonin Dvořák’s Rusalka, guests are invited to journey from “land to sea, plunging beyond the surface of all things ordinary and submerging themselves” in the dramatic theme of the evening and upcoming COC season.

“We’re incredibly excited about this year’s theme,” says Lucia Remedios, Co-Chair of the Centre Stage Gala Committee. “There’s a natural sense of mystery and intrigue about the deep sea and when you combine it with the dark magic and mermaid mythology found in Rusalka, it opens up so many creative possibilities for creating an unforgettable guest experience.”

Canadian Opera Company Gala Not to be Missed

The spectacular Canadian Opera Company Gala will unfold in two stunning realms depicting both land and sea.

The evening will begin in the Isadore and Rosalie Sharp City Room at the Four Seasons Centre, where guests will be transported to a magical land of greenery and trees reminiscent of Rusalka’s enchanted forest. Signature “Subaqueous” cocktails and wines provided by Trius and Andrew Peller will complement the lush setting. Guests will enjoy extended premium seating at the Ensemble Studio Competition, a one-hour vocal competition that’s the culmination of a months-long search for the country’s best young opera talent.

Guests will then be transported to the “sea” portion of the evening on the Four Seasons Centre stage, which will be transformed into a stunning dining space overlooking R. Fraser Elliott Hall. The Chase Group, renowned for creating amazing culinary events and experiences, has designed an oceanic experience for the event, including:

  • Rich blue velvet linens
  • Jewel-toned navy goblets
  • Aquatic florals
  • An effervescent champagne experience designed by Perrier Jouët
  • A raw bar, fresh seafood, and decadent dessert

Members of the COC Ensemble Studio will perform Rusalka-inspired melodies to complement the dreamy Subaqueous ambiance of the evening.
